Steelers’ James Conner: ‘I’ll have a similar role’ in ’19
As we careen toward training camp later this month, certain storylines will whirl quicker round the offseason drumlike a spinning washer just before it comes to a halt.
1 story surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason is the idea that, for the first time in Mike Tomlin’s tenure, there might be a running back-by-committee approach into the backfield.

Annually after James Conner was the workhorse prior to getting hurt, the Steelers additional rookie Benny Snell and comprehend a heartier function for pass-catching back Jaylen Samuels. Discussing with NFL Network for an interview that will air on NFL Total Access on Monday night, Conner suggested he is preparing to get a similar workload to last year.
“I will have a similar role. I am healthy, first of all, I’m 100 percent healthy now. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Conner said of his workload this season. “But we have talent in that room. We have Jaylen Samuels who’s a runner, a tremendous receiver. Benny Snell was obtained by us. We know the work that he did in Kentucky. He’s a hard-bodied runner, therefore all those guys will get bits. It is going to be fun this year just seeing those other guys being powerful.”
The offseason conversation surrounding the backfield — that was kickstarted by GM Kevin Colbert earlier this offseason — would become moot if Conner stays healthy and proves to be the tackle-breaking menace that he was early last season. Throughout his career as head coach, his offense use was favored by Tomlin one back. With a dual-threat alternative like Conner, we can visit Pittsburgh lean back toward a system that relies heavily on one runner, together with others acting as supplements instead of committee members.
Conner noted that given that it’s still early July, there’s been no deep debate on his function this offseason.
“It goes week . The game program will be different each week,” he explained. “I know I will be a big part of it and also have a big role. So far as specifics, we do not play with it like that.”
After watching Le’Veon Bell walk away and the Antonio Brown trade, there have been questions regarding a gift drain in Pittsburgh, but during the non-padded model of offseason workouts Conner dismissed that notion.
“It is early. All we had was OTAs, but OTAs were moving sleek, the offense was clicking,” he said of his crime without both former Pro Bowlers. “All our best men were there. We’ll see. I believe we are going to be just fine. No diss to these guys. It has been awesome, though, playing for each other.”
Last week,” Conner commented on an Instagram article of JuJu Smith-Schuster saying they were going to”shock the entire world .” Conner stated following an offseason of being questioned, he’s simply showing faith in these players still with the company.
“Not reassuring nothing but I think we’ve got a fantastic prospect of going all of the way,” Conner said of the remark. “That is what we play , that is the reason why we show up daily, that’s the ultimate goal, is to receive a ring. I understand that’s a lot of people don’t feel we are able to do it, with the bits we lost, and only ripping us out. We do not mind that, though. We know that they’re out we, but that is why I said we are going to jolt them because I do not believe that they expect us to perform what we are going to do this season.”
While the offseason began with hype surrounding the Cleveland Browns and questions regarding the Steelers’ future, once the regular season begins, there’ll be plenty of people who think Pittsburgh can rebound from a down year.
